Holy Week in Monserrate: A Tradition that Endures
Every year, during Holy Week, Cerro de Monserrate becomes a sanctuary
of faith and reflection. Thousands of pilgrims gather on Good Friday in
search of spiritual connection, offering their prayers to the Fallen Lord.
The tradition of ascending the hill—whether on foot, by cable car,
or via the funicular—allows the faithful to relive the Stations of the Cross,
transforming the journey into a genuine act of devotion.
From Monserrate to Guadalupe on a Tightrope, 2023
On the morning of June 8, Bogotá residents witnessed an incredible
display of bravery and skill. Estonian Jaan Roose, the world slackline champion,
crossed from Cerro de Monserrate to Cerro de Guadalupe on a 1,525-meter
tightrope—equivalent to 14 soccer fields—at a height of 550 meters,
comparable to the height of 1.8 Eiffel Towers.
With unwavering
concentration and nerves of steel, Roose walked the tightrope,
feeling each heartbeat and every gust of wind. After two hours of remarkable
balance and endurance, he successfully reached his destination,
defying heights on a rope that seemed to stretch endlessly.
Jaan Roose arrived in Colombia with three members of his team
and the staff of Red Bull Colombia, who played a key role in making this
challenge a reality. His aim was to match the historic feat of
Canadian tightrope walker Harry Warner, who in 1895 crossed the two
hills of Bogotá on a tightrope, of which only one photograph is known to exist.
